On this date in 1897, Carl Elsener patented a penknife that later became known as the Swiss Army Knife. 97 years later on this date in 1994 a Swiss Army Knife was allegedly use by O. J. Simpson to brutally murder his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman. The crime shocked the nation due to the perception of O. J. Simpson as a sports legend and an affable funny man from his movies. The ensuing trial became a media circus and the incompetence of the prosecution combined with the overt racism of the L. A. Police department led to Simpson’s acquittal. In 2008 Simpson was found guilty of 12 charges related to an incident in Las Vegas, including armed robbery and kidnapping, and sentenced to 33 years in prison.
